The Olympic Ring Bridge Of Beijing
With the architectural world seeing more and more amazing designs, very much engineering-led projects have captured the limelight in recent times. China are without doubt one of the more forward-thinking nations in the world, and it is their San Shan Bridge that is the latest super-modern design to circulate around the world's most enthusiastic designers' conversations.
Designed by Penda of Beijing (China) and Vienna (Italy), the San Shan Bridge spans across the Gui River and will be an integral part of the proposed infrastructural program for the Winter Olympic Games to be held in Beijing in 2022. Connecting Beijing with the district Zhangjiakou, the literal English translation of 'San Shan' is 'three Mountains' and describes how the bridges' form with it's 3 arches mimics that of it's hilly backdrop.
Connecting the busy-ness of Beijing to the undulating valleys in the north, the design is both highly design-influenced and superbly functionally efficient. Manufactured of pre-stressed double Helix's that are designed as such to capture the Olympics' logo rings as much as the mountains' backdrop, the structure intersects itself in various locations to be as slender as possible, all engineered by market leading ARUP.
