Materiality is a fine quality for any product to have, and in today’s world of distant manufacturing and global logistics, products have become either lesser-well (more cheaply) made, or include more-adventurous (creativity at a lower cost) ideas. Usually the former, but the latter has certainly risen by way of globalisation and a merging of global cultures.
One such idea is having perfume in a concrete bottle. Incase you haven’t checked for a while, concrete is as heavy and wholesome as ever, and small quantities of liquid (80ml to be exact) is as light as ever. So why, we hear you ask.
On offer by Japanese fashion house Comme des Garçons, this fragrance is certainly playing with juxtaposition. In celebration of the urban world, Comme des Garcons say “In a world where concrete is ubiquitous, the mundane fabric of urban cityscapes, now it is given disparate context: the uniquely refined realm of perfumery. A versatile material finds an unpredictable form. An exploration of destruction, construction and creation, Concrete is a fragrance where material preconceptions are deftly demolished, paving the way for something new.”
All very good and well-intentioned, but still why? Other brands have got this idea communicated via having perfume in a non-desript bottle that is complete with cheap cardboard packaging of a concrete photo on its exterior. Because of ‘quality by materiality’, a passion of SATORI & SCOUTs forever and always. With the perfume’s bottle featuring a wonderfully curved and moulded form with tangible-concrete edges and surfaces, there is nothing non-authentic about this. Of course with promotional cardboard as a box, but the perfume bottle takes full limelight for effort.
Ironically, the perfume smells of sandalwood and subtle notes of spice, that all-time classic, rather than concrete and it’s non-smelly ways. Launched in New York (USA) with cement mixers pouring dry ice at various events, such a perfume is coming soon in September. Unique, huh?!
